Michael Spavor, a businessman, was jailed in December 2018 and tried for espionage in March this year.

A Chinese court is expected to decide on Wednesday in the case of detained Canadian Michael Spavor, a Canadian source directly familiar with the matter told Reuters news agency.

Chinese authorities arrested Spavor, a businessman, in December 2018, days after Canada arrested Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou at the US extradition request. His fellow Canadian and political analyst Michael Kovrig was also arrested that same month.

Both men were kept mostly in isolation for months before being charged with espionage. Their trials took place in March.

The US and Canada have accused China of retaliating for Meng’s arrest, but Beijing insists the cases are not linked.

Meng, the daughter of Huawei founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei, lives in one of his mansions in Vancouver as he fights extradition to the US; A decision in his case is expected soon.

Spavor and Kovrig have had virtually no contact with the outside world since their arrest and have had little access to Chinese lawyers. Virtual consulate visits only resumed in October, after a nine-month hiatus that officials said was necessary due to the coronavirus.

The conviction rate in Chinese courts controlled by the Communist Party is close to 100 percent.

The possible decision in Spavor’s case came Tuesday after a Chinese court rejected the appeal of Canadian Robert Schellenberg, who was sentenced to death for drug trafficking.

Canadian Ambassador to China Dominic Barton condemned the decision and called for an amnesty.

Barton added that it was “no coincidence” that China announced the results of Schellenberg’s appeal while the case against Meng was pending in Canada.
